First of all, this isn't what I think of as romantic suspense. The hero and heroine are already married, with a baby. There is some involvement with a former lover of hers, but it isn't really the focus of the story. The plot involves around a conspiracy aimed at the U.S. presidency by an Arab terrorist with the help of some gangsters from China. There is also an American involved, and you are pretty much left guessing till near the end as to who it is and what the outcome will be. The writing is good but some of the scenarios are hard to believe, which is why I only gave it a moderate score. Since I got it for free, and it was better than some I've read, I would still be willing to check out some of the author's other work.

A Good Geopolitical SuspenseTthriller.

“Volcano: The Kane Legacy # 2” by Gabby Grant and Rosa Turner Boschen was an exciting suspense novel set in the months of late 2001 in the environs of the District of Columbia and associated parts of Virginia and Maryland. The principal characters are Mark Neal, Ana Kane Neal, and colleague of Mark’s and a former lover of Ana’s, Joe McFadden. The relationships are rocky in the eyes of the men, and they are complicated in Ana’s eyes, although in her heart of hearts she knows that she shares deeper more abiding bonds with Mark, partly because they are married, partly because they are the parents of a baby, Isa, and finally because she knows that if things got really difficult and dangerous, she knows she can count on Mark. They all work in some form of intelligence gathering or analysis mostly as civilians working in the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Intelligence Directorate. McFadden is a career CIA operative who is a jack of many trades both those that are legal and those that are not so much.
While little if any mention is made of the actual events in previous months of 9-11-01 Al Queda devastation in New York City, Washington, and the countryside of rural Pennsylvania, the problems that unfold in this story specifically focus on an attempt to compromise the elements under the control of Mark and their associated DoD Military Intelligence Directorate counterparts. The intrusion involves both Middle Eastern and Communist Chinese agents with the express intent and purpose to compromise classified documents at all levels focused on intelligence gathering and intelligence analysis. The express desire is to cause Mark Neal enough trouble through a family hostage taking plan and an office breach plan that occur simultaneously in the freezing cold and precipitation of the Eastern Seaboard in deep winter. The capture of Ana and their Neals’ housekeeper/nanny compromised situation with her husband are exploited with deft field craft and perfect execution in less than optimum circumstances.
While Ana is briefly kidnapped, she manages to escape and evade only to run into her old love interest, Joe.Despite some obvious opportunities to rekindle old feelings, Ana resists. The end of her kidnapping and the situation Mark finds Joe and Ana in once he figures things out causes Mark to doubt everything about the short time of marriage that Ana and he have shared. As the breach is investigated it is found that the actual plan for the scenario being played out was part of a plan originated by another one of Mark’s former colleagues, the one whom appears to be suffering from some form of dementia or other disease process.
The basics of the book are fairly common for the genre, after all espionage is espionage not much way to change it or change its results – compromised security, missing secrets, uncovered dark programs, etc. The fact that an old scenario from training was being carried out Mark and Ana, as well as the senior Kane, Ana’s father, worked on the inside to minimize the duration of the exposure of sensitive information, while Joe doing what the rote CIA operatives do in situations like this, you plug the leak.
The plot may be a bit trite, too cut and dried, or maybe I have read too many things by the other writers in this field. The addition of the family makes this read a bit more enjoyable and the working out of the conflict between Mark and Ana is especially well done, particularly in the realm of Mark’s having no clue about how Ana really feels. In the end he is better educated, but being a man, I believe he will fall off the wagon, and Ana will have to get him back on the straight and narrow once again.
Recommendations: this is a fast paced read with the usual suspense, thriller (political not paranormal) types of plot designs and event initiation and resolution. The addition of the family component was a nice add, in my view, as it made things just that much more hectic for our hero, Mark, and it very nearly backfired in a very bad way, but luckily the devastation points were averted and things resolved nicely. If you like this type of read, it is a quick one and has some unique things you might want to go through a bit slower to see how those unique characteristics play out. It does have some adult language, and some scenes of violence that might require a consideration for parent approval. These occurrences are about as to be expected, and any reader at high school level and above should be able to handle what is offered. 5 stars out of 5 stars? You bet. While the Volcano didn’t actually erupt in this book, there were plenty of fireworks and shaking going on that you might just believe it got close!! Mind the seismographs and the tilt meters, and be sure to warn before it actually blows, but for now, at least, it is quieting down. One more crisis averted.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. You will love this book the second of the series just as much as I have. It is just as good as the first one is, but can be read alone too. Great characters and story line just as the first one is as well. I can't wait to read more to this series. Will Ana and Mark save their relationship?
