Few writers are equally capable in multiple genres. Some of my favorite novelists are terrible short story writers, and vice-versa. I loved Ray Bradbury's short stories but never responded as strongly to his novels; and Sue Grafton's short stories should never have made it past the editor.

But Joanne Harris is one of those few who are masters of any form. She writes adult novels, young adult novels, and short stories -- all with humor, depth, and virtuosity.

The stories in this collection are delightfully eclectic. The narratives vary from first person to third person, present tense to past tense. They are centered in mundane reality and startling new worlds, with characters equally mundane and transcendental. Not only does each story vary from its predecessor, but even the stories themselves can take strange and wonderful twists.

What is clear through all these stories is Harris' love and concern for humanity, her recognition of all our diversities and perversities, too.

One simple story brought me to eruptions of laughter, startling my wife who was trying to sleep beside me as I read. It is a story of the day when a rain god resident in New York encounters a sunny girl whose impact on him has worldwide consequences.

And another story, written for her daughter (who was dissatisfied with the ending of the Phantom of the Opera), offers a contemporary take on the story that moved me to tears.

Only one story -- Cookie -- left me unsatisfied. I felt that Harris had a better sense of how she was ending the story than I did. But the fault may be mine. It in no way kept me from cherishing the entire collection.

All in all, this is a great read, and a book to keep for sharing and revisiting.

Joanne Harris remains one of my favorite writers. She presents an interesting collection of short stories that are well developed and meaty. Most of the stories were enjoyable and well worth the investment of time. Some of them were so absolutely fascinating that I hope she will develop them more fully into a full blown book or two.

Wish it didn't have to end...

I know that a series cannot continue forever, eventually the characters die or just get old. I know that it must end, and I must say goodbye to John Talon and his group of survivors. The White Flag series is one of the best, and I refuse to qualify that with "in the zombie apocalypse genre" because I think that good writing is good writing period. I hate to say goodbye, but I am also thankful for the extension into the children's world. Ah, the story as I love it is ending, but a new adventure may be beginning! I never include any plot lines in my reviews, especially if you've gotten to this novel in the series. You know its good, just read it!

Reviewers "911192" & "Ridgway" Have It Right. Seemed Like More Of An Extension To Book 5

I can't improve on the great in depth reviews done by "911192" and "Ridgway".

The first 5 in The White Flag Series still rank as one of the better zombie apocalypse offerings available. However, this individual offering seemed rushed and was a "fast read", though not in a good way. If that makes sense? I found myself skimming pages. I didn't get that satisfaction that comes with an epic conclusion to a series.

Personally, I found that the removal of any human threat element weakend the story.

The Author has made it known that he is developing a fast forward where the children of the current characters pick up the battle. I would have liked some form of a teaser to be included that hinted at perhaps a slow developing threat. At the risk of repeating myself, I prefer multiple threat levels and can only hope that this will be added back to the future series.

I had high expectations and this was just OK for me.

I loved Joe Talluto's White Flag of the Dead series! If you like books of Shawn Chesser, Z.A. Recht, Timothy Long, or Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead, than I strongly encourage you to read this and the other five books in the WFTD series. Joe Talluto writes strong, confident, and determined characters that inspire and amaze. His zombie infested world is dark, intriguing, dangerous, and exhilarating.

Absolutely horrible. I haven't the patience to list the dozens ...

There should be an option to give negative stars and I would give this 1,000 negative stars. Absolutely horrible. I haven't the patience to list the dozens of reasons why, but I'll give you the highlights.

The relationship between the two main characters is a poisonous and destructive one. The male character displays signs of bipolar disorder, swinging wildly and unpredictably between extreme emotions. When the female character doesn't immediately do what he wants, he frequently becomes violent and causes her physical harm. At one point he chokes her to the verge of unconsciousness. Less than a page later he is telling her how he would never hurt her and that she is safe with him. He blames his violence on her, taking no responsibility for his own actions.

Despite the fact that the male is obviously dangerous, the female chooses to disregard this because she wants to have sex with him. She allows him to physically, verbally, mentally and emotionally abuse her, taking solace in the few scraps of affection he deigns to throw her way. Despite the fact he continually refuses to actually have sex with her, leaving her sexually frustrated time and again, she keeps following him around like a puppy hoping for a bone instead of a kick.

This story feels like it was written by a junior high student. Massive plot holes, excessive use of tired old clichés, continual use of "he/she somehow just knew" ( uh huh. Because the author couldn't find any logical reason, so stick with "just knew"), and and over abundance of "really" and "very" because apparently the author didn't have access to a thesaurus. Instead we get juvenile phrases like "very very scared" or "really really angry".

Pass ths by. Pass it by and don't look back. It was painful to read and I only finished it so that I coukd give an honest review of the whole book rather than just the first few chapters,

HOT Sci-Fi/Distopian/Paranormal Mash-Up that Titillates the Senses

Rocked my socks right off. I'd actually give it 4½♥'s, but fudged up to 5 for GR. I received a complimentary copy from A.M. Hargrove in exchange for a honest review. This book was SO great... it reminded me of the Donnie and Marie Osmond song "A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock N Roll" only, instead substitute Sci-fi and Dystopian (and a healthy dose of Paranormal.) I really love how this book mashes up so many genres together into this little harmonious, entertaining package.

Those that have shied away from A.M.'s previous works due to them being in the YA Category can pick this book up with no anxiety. It's spicy enough to turn up the heat on any reader. "Jurgasms", anyone? (Trust me, they are a VERY good thing and I'm first in line.) It was just the perfect balance of instant attraction, alpha males, fights, and the romance remains this roaring fire underneath it all. There is no fear in this book of insta-love, rather the romance is more organic and passionate.

Any concerns about not being familiar with the series are not a problem as well. While you won't have the full background, previous books are not required to still love and understand the book. It's a futuristic and darker world with aliens and other dark creatures that go bump in the night. Anyone who would enjoy something a little different, a little spicy will find a gem with this first book of the Praestani series.

TOTAL UNADULTERATED CRAP.

Like a previous reviewer said, the many reason for THIS being bad are more numerous than the total words in this so called literature. I think the worst part was just the language. Curse words used for everything, stilted speech for others and absolute nonsense words for the most part. Example... crapity-crap, crapster place to be, etc. Not only did the main female character use this terrible speech, when other characters started to use the exact terminology I could no longer take the level of juvenile inability to communicate. Typos, poor grammar, cursing in place of actually writing and that inane way she apparently made the female lead a complete idiot. I will be honest after all this I had to stop reading this trash when it seemed that no less than two other characters started to sound just like the main female . I couldn't even finish although usually I do no matter what because I paid for it, but every time her language, or more like her lack of it, threw me hurling out of the story. BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
