Known nationally for winning a Super Bowl and receiving Coach of the Year honors while leading the Green Bay Packers, the Mike McCarthy story begins decades earlier in Pittsburgh, a city famed for its football prodigies.

Born in 1962 and raised in the Steel City Mike followed closely the great Steelers teams of the seventies so it was ironic that he collected his Super Bowl win against that same team many years later.

As an All-Conference player as tight-end during his collegiate career when Mike finished his graduate studies he returned home to join the coaching staff at the University of Pittsburgh. He made his NFL debut as a quality-control assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs then served as their wide-receivers coach. Before getting a job as head coach of the Green Bay Packers McCarthy traveled the circuit with stints in New Orleans and San Francisco.

Always playing or coaching on offense, the head coaching job at Green Bay has been a perfect fit for Coach Mike with the emergence of Aaron Rodgers and the potent Green Bay offense.

Titletown Again!!

This author also penned a biography of Super Bowl XLV MVP Aaron Rodgers. Some great behind-the-scenes tidbits. I especially enjoyed the story of measuring the players for their Super Bowl rings the night BEFORE the game. As a Packer shareholder with a Super Bowl ring of his own from this victory, this serves as a great memory.

Nice review of recent seasons

I enjoyed this book very much. For a Packer fan, it's a fun review of the recent seasons under McCarthy. There was some introductory material about his earlier life, but not as much as I was expecting. I would actually have preferred a bit more of that.

Drawing from a range of disciplines-including anthropology, sociology, the history of science, literary studies, cultural studies, social theory and economics-the essays in this volume engage with Newton as a thinker and examine his legacy. Some contributions illustrate the power of physical metaphors in understanding the social world; many others point to the limits of this endeavour. Still others show how since the eighteenth century Newtonian thought has influenced thinkers as diverse as Blake, Marx, Freud and Pierre Bourdieu. This innovative collection prompts a reconsideration of the importance of Newton for the social sciences and humanities.

About the Author
Professor Ghassan Hage is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the University of Melbourne's Future Generation Professor of Anthropology and Social Theory. He is the author of White Nation, Against Paranoid Nationalism, and Waiting (MUP). He has researched and published widely in the comparative anthropology of nationalism, multiculturalism, racism and migration.

Emma Kowal is a cultural anthropologist of white anti-racism and Indigenous governance in Australia. She is the co-editor of Moving Anthropology: Critical Indigenous Studies, and her work has been published in journals including American Anthropologist, Social Science and Medicine and Cultural Studies. She is currently a National Health and Medical Research Council Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne.

What i got from reading The Plague by Albert Camus

The Plague Final Book Review
The book I chose was written by Albert Camus called The Plague. The way it was fabricated had me puzzled throughout each chapter. However, once I grasped my own concept it became more interesting to me. The Plague is a good book even though you will get confused throughout once you keep reading you will understand it’s about strength. The book to me is a guide to survival when you’re in a bad situation. The book represents reality everything in life is not always warm, friendly, and comfortable. Occasionally we try to escape from things we can’t handle. It also shows you how others cope with their thoughts and moods during a crisis. Plague is also about the way one choose to live. Some people go through days without thinking taking everything for granted. Then there are others who take nothing for granted and are striving for better. Its seems to me that the people who took like for granted lived for a long period of time like Cottard. Then Rieux wife a woman who cared about life and her family passed away. That’s what I mean by it being a guide into reality because that’s how it is now good people suffer while others live that’s my opinion.
The main characters in my book are Rieux, Tarrou, Paneloux and Cottard. Rieux is a doctor who found a dead rat laying in the streets. Once Rieux found the rat people in the town became sick and died. He then began to do research in silence trying not to alarm the citizens. Rieux became worried when he lost another patient so he started to warn the people in town about an illness and its symptoms. Tarrous was a light minded person at first who agitated Rieux but later became his partner. Tarrous organized and lead volunteers to help Rieux fight the plague. Paneloux was a priest who came into town to tell people why they were sick. The priest told them because they are sinners god was punishing them. Cottard was a smuggler who tried to kill himself because he was want by authorities. Cottard enjoyed the commotion the plague caused in the city because it kept him safe and free.
The Plague stands out because it speaks upon affliction, death, world war and revenge that’s still going on today. The book brings you into reality that’s what makes it unique it also stands alone like all Camus books his own fabrication. How many books have you read that were horrific with realistic situations and resolutions? That’s why I think the book is still popular because it’s something that can really happen today. The way they handle the situation would be similar also some people going crazy while others would be praying.
My favorite character in the book was Rieux he was a brave doctor. The reason why I chose Rieux is because he was dedicated to his people in his town. Rieux didn’t care what others had to say he was about protecting them in any way possible. The doctor got with other specialist to see how they could prevent the spread of plague. Even though Rieux wasn’t the doctor the to diagnose he was the only one who was persistent in finding a cure. Rieux knows that people in the town only real vice is ignorance that’s why he handled it in a different manner. Even when it became clear that the anti-plague efforts weren’t effective. Rieux continued in putting all his effort in fighting the plague. Rieux was about the movement and embracing that people are different from one another and believed anything was true. Rieux heard so many rumors about the illness and disease before the diagnosis but he never listened. Rieux was very strong minded no matter what others said he didn’t let that get to him and effect what he was trying to do for the town.

An irresistibly fun read

I brought Mary Simes' "The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Café" on vacation, expecting it to be a fast and interesting chicklit read for the plane ride and while lounging by the pool.
The plot is predictable: Big city girl Ellen Branford returns to small town Maine to deliver a letter left to her by her dying grandmother. She almost drowns and is saved by a hunky local, and they kiss. But wait! Ellen is also engaged to a high-powered attorney with his eye on political office.
Yet while the plot isn't the most original, it unfolds with enough twists and surprises to keep the reader fully engaged.
The humor is clever and sharp, and the scenes at the Antler bar are laugh-out-loud funny.
The best part of the book, however, is the writing, which is fast-paced, funny and endearing. Simes' paints such a realistic picture of coastal Maine that the prose almost breathes of salt and ocean; you can smell the damp odor of the shabby hotel room, taste the rich flavor of a bowl of homemade clam chowder.
I'd recommend this as a solid summer read or a good gift for a close girlfriend.
Warning: Just try to get through to the end without baking blueberry muffins.

Did I read a different book (with the same cover)?

I'm happy for this first-time author that there are so many positive reviews here. While I'm reluctant to sound mean-spirited, presumably Amazon's readers are looking for honest opinions; I always am. So ... I was embarrassed for the author. The comparison to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (a blurb by James Patterson appearing on the book cover) is hardly apt, since Guernsey was such a delight. Irresistible, on the other hand, has astonishingly shallow characters and dumb dialog. The plot had some potential, if handled intelligently, but that didn't happen here.

The irresistible blueberry bakeshop & cafe by Mary Simses
What a very nice surprise. The cover is why I wanted to read this book. Once I got into the book the story line was something very appealing to me on many counts.
The locale of Maine, photography and exploring into the past.
Helen starts out on a journey for her now dead grandmother-to deliver a letter to Mr. Cummings in Maine. When she arrives she ends up falling through a dock and she is rescued by Roy.
She tracks down numerous things along the way about her grandmothers past. Her fiance gets concerned when she doesn't make it back to NYC so he shows up there, and so does her mother for a photography shoot for their upcoming wedding.
Problem is she has choices now-and little does she realize the reason why she was sent here, rather than just mailing the letter sinks in and gives her advice she may follow.
Hoping to find more from this author as I really totally was enthralled reading this.
Before I listened to this via NLS I had bought the hard bound book. Was hoping for a recipe...
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

The First "Modern" Treatment of Race in The 20th Century

Grant's "Passing of the Great Race", although barely known today (except amongst a few Racialists), was, at its time, a big seller. Former President Theodore Roosevelt (himself a Racialist, though more moderate then most in the movement on race) wrote a glowing review for the dust jacket, if I recall correctly. I had the chance of reading it some six months ago, and found, that whilst some information is out of date and some concepts are flawed, many of the core ideas of the book are still sound. It was the first book of its day, to my knowledge, that properly divided the Caucasiod Race into modern categories (by-in-large ignoring the old terms, such as Teutonic and Aryan), although that is one that is partialy out of date. The major arguements of the book are that the Nordic subdivision of the white race are its most productive, but are being bred out (as well as being killed off in the World War[which was a feature of Dr Lothrop Stoddard's "Rising Tide of Color"]) by the 'lower' Europeans, and that a sound Eugenics programme and a reduction in Eastern and Southern European immigration (the massive Third World Immigration wave was not even thought possible at that time). While I tend to disagree with many of the proposals in the book, it was one of the early pillars of Racialism in the 1920s and is still a pretty good read. One word of warning, this book is most certainly not for all tastes. If you are Politicaly Correct, or, for that matter, of modern sensibilities, do not read it. Otherwise, enjoy reading a good, albeit, biased history. R. A. Merryman

Review of "The Passing of The Great Race"

"The Passing of The Great Race" was one of the racialist books written between 1855 and 1920 that would strongly influence the the National Socialist Party. The first was Gobineau's "The Inequality of The Human Races", the second was Houston Stewart Chamberlain's "The Foundations of The Nineteenth Century", the third was this one, and the fourth was Lothrop Stoddard's "The Rising Tide of Color Against White World Supremacy". Grant was a lawyer and conservationist who was a firm beleiver in the Old Order, free of Bolshevism and Socialism and centered around an Anglo-Saxon culture. Grant always tried to portray himself as more scientific than romantic racial theorists such as Chamberlain, but his theories actually have little scientific basis. For example, his division of Whites into Nordic, Alpine, and Mediterranean Races is anchored only on the basis of Nordic Scnadinavians having blonde hair, Alpine Slavs having brown hair, and Mediterranean Italians having black hair. Even worse is Grant's lack of historical basis. He considers the French, Southern Germans, and Poles to be a mix of Teutonic or Celtic Nordic peoples and dark-haired Alpine peoples who invaded Europe from Asia, but there was never any record of Asiatic peoples reaching France or Germany, at least not after the Celtic period. His classifications of Alpine are also very flimsy. He considers Southern Germans to be of Alpine stock, completely ignoring the fact that Southern Germans speak a Teutonic language and often have Teutonic features such as blonde hair and blue eyes. He also considers the Walloons of Belgium to be Alpine, ignoring the fact that they are descendants of the Celtic Belgae, who the Romans clearly described as being tall with blonde and red hair {sounds Nordic to me}. He also claims that the Irish and Welsh have substantial amounts of Mediterranean blood, ignoring the fact that both those peoples are Celtic and often have blonde or red hair. The most puzziling part of this whole thing is how this book became so popular when practicaly everyone is labled as inferior. Grant considers the only pure Nordics to be people with blonde hair and blue eyes, so why did people like Teddy Roosevelt {brunett} endorse it? Grant's book just lacks any spirit. I've read Chamberlain's "Foundations of The Nineteenth Century", and anyone who is of Celtic, Teutonic, or Slavic stock and is anti-Semitic will be riled up with the romaticism of the "Germanic" race being in constant battle with the Jews for survival. Anyone who has Celtic, Scandinavian, German, Anglo-Saxon, Polish, or Baltic ancestry is included in this Germanic race, while Grant tends to alienate anyone who isn't a blonde, blue-eyed Anglo-Saxon or Swede, even putting the Germans down as inferior. This book should also be compared to Stoddard's "The Rising Tide of Color", which was written four years later. Stoddard also went by the Nordic-Alpine-Mediterranean model, but focused less on this than on the White Race as a whole. Stoddard was a visionary, looking to White issue in the future. While Grant clamored about keeping non-Nordic Russians and Italians out of the country, Stoddard warned that the real dangers are non-White Asians and Negroes. Grant's book has little relevance to today's issues, as practically every White American is a German-Irish-Polish-Italian mix. Stoddard, however, saw that all Whites had to band together against the "rising tide of color".

Most Popular Book of Its Day

Madison Grant's work is an intriguing summary of racial thought during his day. It was one of the bestsellers. It is, however, not a scientific textbook and should not be treated as such. Dr. Grant, however, was thoroughly knowedgable with a chair in zoology and as the major proponent of ecology in his day as the main force behind establishing Yellowstone. His works, along with others by men like Dr. Lothrop Stoddard heavily influenced future legislation in the 1930s restricting immigration. One reading this book must look at it from the perspective it was written and not by the anti-racist, bigoted perspective we have today.
