Names of God Bible - it's Great!!!

The Names of God Bible is the best bible I have reviewed so far and I own at least 50 different bibles (Holman, Nelson, Zonderman and various versions (KJV, NKJV, TLB, Living, Amplified, New International and Message). However, the Names of God Bible is so intimate in it's presentation of the names of GOD throughout the bible and it's feaures on information explaining the names of God is great! I love this bible - it's the bible I've been seeking for during my journey in trying to know more about God (over 25 years) and His Love for man. I recommend this bible for anyone who is seeking a relationship with God. It's awesome.

"The Names of God Bible"

Reviewing a bible... this is most definitely a first. What am I going to say? Recommended? Obviously, what follows is a review of the particularities of this version and this translation.

What you have here is a version of the "God's Word Translation." The entire thing focuses on the names of God. The cross references, few and far between as they are, point to other uses of particular names of God. The sidebars and informational pages focus on explaining the names and usages of particular names for God. And every time one of the names for God is used, this version keeps that name in a transliterated version of the original; things like "El Chay" (Living God) and Sar Shalom (Prince of Peace).

As a way for people with no Hebrew and Greek background, this version of the bible offers a great window into the various names of God and what they mean. The sidebars are quite interesting. Personally, I think you are better off learning a little bit of the original languages, but I know that this is not possible, nor easy, for most people. My only other comment is that I wish it had been packaged in another translation. There is nothing huge wrong with the 'God's Word Translation.' No heresy, no big mistakes. However, in every area where there are translation difficulties, the GWT gives no indication whatsoever of alternatives of selection process. Perhaps that was just a choice they had to make, as making this both a 'Names of God' version and a study version would have made a huge book.

Conclusion: 3.5 Stars. Conditionally Recommended. Interesting stuff, acceptable translation. If you want to read something with the original names of God in it, then look no further. Just make sure you don't make this your main or only bible version/translation.

First of all, I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to Ann Spangler and her publisher for sending me a copy of "The Names of God Bible" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me.

"The Names of God Bible" in God's Word Translation is amazing. Peppered with Ann Spangler's writings on the Names of God, this easy-to-understand version of scripture is a joy to read. It doesn't contain the number of references that you will find in a reference or study Bible, but what it does contain is a powerful prayer resource and a valuable way to know God.

This Bible showcases 71 names of God, their meanings, the promises associated with each name, and a devotional reading on praying to God as identified by that name. The introduction to each book identifies the key name(s) of God used in that book and the meaning of the name(s). Within the text, the names of God are printed in brown to set them apart. The reader's eye is really drawn to the names.

Other helps include a chart showing the first appearance of each name in scripture and another showing the number of appearances of each name. There is also a valuable pronunciation guide, a topical prayer guide and several reading plans. Key scriptures are highlighted for reflection and memorization. This is a wonderful prayer tool that will draw the reader into a deeper, broader relationship with God as they get to know Him by His names.

Great for exploring witch/which path to follow!

Keira Flynn offers a simple yet very informative primer for the person wanting to embark on a journey through witchcraft. Careful to illustrate that witchcraft is not about evil works and deeds, she begins the book with a history that describes the spiritual roots of what we now know as "the witch." Being familiar with other religions, I was intrigued by the similarities between the path of a witch and commonalities of other spiritual paths. Virtuous concepts such as honor, reverence, beauty, and compassion run deep within Buddhism, Hinduism, Baha'i, Judaism, Islam, and even Christianity. This review is not for the purpose of evaluating the theology behind Flynn's book, but only to provide an assessment that her arguments are well-spoken and come from a foundation of deep spirituality, not just to promote casting spells about willy-nilly. Flynn strongly advises that a witch should be spiritually grounded and seek first to connect and nurture life-giving elements. She further explains in the rest of the book literally how to be a witch. Reading this feels something like having walked into a secret initiation process in some clandestine society and becoming privy to their most closely guarded secrets. Obviously, there is much more to becoming a practicing witch than just what is in this book. Though this isn't for my own spiritual journey, it is, however, enough to familiarize a newcomer to this path to the point of deciding whether this may be for you. Even with the inclusion of spells in this work, Flynn makes it clear that most witches practice and learn in conjunction with others. It is a very refreshing and informative read for anyone curious about becoming a witch.

This was a really good guide

I thought that this was a really good guide. It takes a very thorough and level-headed approach to witchcraft, which I think is very important. It is also about as concise as it can be. It does not waste time with anything that does not relate to the topic. It goes through everything in a very simple manner, so that anyone can understand it. It really teaches you want it means to be a witch.

Anybody who has an interest in witchcraft, or is even just looking to learn some more about it, should take the time to read through this book.

Fascinating

I am into nature and the universe and harnessing the power like the secret and all that. Yet I was also born into a religious home and I still hold onto those beliefs. The more and more I learn I realize that witches are not "evil" but just in tune with life and the power that is in life. This book just further solidifies that in my mind and I feel enlightened after reading it. It even has some spells in it ... I think I might give it a shot ;)

I knew it was only a matter of time before his slow, methodical strokes would become the punishment I knew was coming for the events of today. What I wasn't prepared for was the thrill in the waiting. With each new rotation of him caressing each side, teasing me, I trembled with renewed anticipation.
“You’ve been a naughty girl, haven’t you?” His hand trailed down and when it cycled back up, his fingertips carried up the hem of my dress. Each inch brought the warm night breeze to my skin. I wanted him to spank me. To punish me. Jesus, I never thought I’d voluntarily lay there and wait for someone to wail on me, but I’d never wanted anything more than this. I wanted him to take me to a place where everything, even pain, faded. A place where there was only us.
He gripped one of my cheeks, kneading and pumping it. “You deserve to be punished, don’t you?” He tightened his hold when I didn’t answer. “Answer me, Leila!”
“Yes,” It came out as a whine. A plea. “Yes sir.” Punish me, Jacob. Please.
“When I saw the way you were moving with that man—gyrating, laughing, pressing your body against his—I wanted to drag you from the room. After decking him, of course.” He added.
Regret flared at the thought of that. It would have caused quite a scene, but the idea of him punching out someone over jealousy made me shiver with delight.
“I wanted to take you home and strap you to the cross.” His finger trailed down the seam of my thong, stopping at my pulsing core. “I wanted to flog you until you screamed my name.”
I imagined the fear, the pain, and the perverse pleasure. It made me squirm as he rubbed my heat through the thin fabric. “But I can’t wait until we get home, Leila.” His voice was rough. Rife with lust. “I want to punish you now.”
He stopped stroking me and it took all my self-control to not beg him for more. Before I submitted, I would have tried to get my point across in blatant ways. Throaty moans. Rocking my hips. But I trusted that he knew exactly what I needed—and that it wouldn't come so easy. Not tonight.
“You will count out every strike,” he commanded. “Every. Last. One.”

BEING HONEST I JUST STARTED READING AVA Claire and was lost in her spell. I loved Leila and her strength and courage to fight for what she wanted. The series is a must read. Thank you. I look forward to reading more.

This book is filled with both beautiful and heartbreaking parts. Right from the start Rachel is causing trouble, she does something to Leila that is breaking her heart but Leila is doing it to protect Jacob but it is breaking her heart. Then just when it is supposed to be done and over Rachel shows her true colors and her true scheme and makes Leila look like she did something wrong. Jacob turns on Leila and tells her that her "services" are no longer needed and tells her to leave. She is devastated and broken. Allegra comes to take her to the airport, they talk, she shares things about her past, Jacob's father, and they decide to come up with a plan to get Jacob back. I love the plan and I am not going to put in this review what it is because I don't want to spoil it for others. The trip to his house in the Limo is so hot, I loved it. Once again she says too much which makes him feel too much and he pulls away but this time she doesn't let him and I finally think it is about time. We get to read about them waking up, enjoying a normal breakfast, and of course a round of hot sex at the breakfast table, nothing better right lol Then she says "it" and right away she thinks she sees something in his eyes. That is all I am going to say so I don't spoil what happens next.

An excellent collection of essays

This is really a superb introduction to atheism. What gets my attention is that it includes a number of essays that contextualize atheism in its particular historical instances.

The first chapter, "Atheism in Antiquity," details how naturalism and similar concepts central to atheism were advocated long ago. Due to the prevailing influences of Christianity and other voices and powers in the ancient world, however, they didn't "catch on" like other metaphysical notions did.

The next chapter, "Atheism in Modern History," is a superb supplement, and is worth the price of the entire volume in my estimation. In it, Gavin Hyman argues persuasively that modern atheism is a reactionary phenomenon to a modern conception of God, which was different from more ancient conceptions. Hyman says that the advent of modernity made the rise of atheism inevitable. Modernity and atheism are inexorably entwined. What might atheism do, then, in our postmodern context?

Much later in the book, the Derridean scholar, John Caputo, shows how the matrix of postmodernity alters the strength of atheism. His conclusion: postmodernity is just as unfavorable to theism as it is to atheism, and there is the paradoxical attempt to move beyond the binary oppositions of the Western tradition (in this case, between theism and atheism) into a new and unforeseen option. It is difficult to say exactly how this tertium quid should be described. A kind of Levinasian mysticism of sorts, tempered by a learned ignorance? What we can say is that there is a reluctance to affirm naturalism or a supernaturalism too strongly. While a "weak" conception of God predominates, the language of theology remains in use.

Phil Zuckerman and Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi give sociological and psychological profiles of atheism. Zuckerman's sociological chapter is quite dry, with little more than statistics. What else should I expect, though, I suppose. Beit-Hallahmi's psychological profiling is much more interesting, and makes the case that atheists are generally male, married, well-read and committed in various ways to the academic world, less dogmatic (which seems ironic in some cases, no?), less prejudiced, more tolerant, compassionated and conscientious, but oftentimes distanced and unhappy.

Steven G. Gey's essay ("Atheism and the Freedom of Religion") gives some historical depth to exactly how atheists have been treated by recent Western governments. Despite their being "good to have as neighbors" (Beit-Hallahmi's conclusion), Gey details how the modern atheists experience with the socio-politico powers that be has not been too friendly -- from outright silencing of centuries past (or just a century ago, in most cases!) to the present socio-politico discourse that, in various ways, gives a distinct advantage to those of a religious persuasion. (No wonder atheists don't tend to be happy!) While in many ways the United States of America paved the way for religious toleration and freedom, it is shown to be presently lagging behind when compared with other nations (e.g. those of eastern Europe especially). The U.S., in many ways, is much the same as it was two centuries ago.

The Analytic tradition gets a sizeable representation here, which is what would be expected. Daniel Dennett, too, gets a chapter to argue for the Darwinian variable that supports atheistic non-belief. I wanted to be convinced of it more than I was. Other contributions include the relationship of atheism to feminism (the author argues that all consistent feminists should be atheists), religious freedom, and anthropology. William Lane Craig is allowed one chapter to give the other side a voice (theism). Some of his arguments are laughable -- literally. Others are more convincing, until one reads the subsequent rebuttals. It must be said, though, that anyone could refute such a summary as W. L. Craig's (it amounts to something like 14 pages in all). It is simply too short to argue convincingly for anything. That being said, it is only an introductory text. It's quite nice that a contrary position was included at all, actually.

While some essays are certainly better than others (an inevitability, of course), all are at least a B/B+ status, and a few are quite exceptional indeed (A/A+).

I like Richard Dawkins quite a bit, and would recommend his _God Delusion_ and Sam Harris's _The End of Faith_. However, as a balanced, scholarly work, you would be hard-pressed to find something better, I think. Moreover, this is an excellent "spring-board" source. Only the best of the best are included here, and those whom they cite are well worth taking note of.

excellent introduction to atheism

I recently read this superb introductory book to atheism.I have read more sophisticated books on this subject,but i think that this book is the most appropriate for the general reader who wanths to be introduced to what atheism represents.Its chapters are written by experts on their fields and comprise the history of atheism from antiquity to modern times,arguments for and against the existence of God,the implications of atheism for other aspects of our life as for example morality and approaches from different cognitive faculties to the subject of religion such as the relationship between atheism and the state and what anthropology says about the origin of religious beliefs.I highly recommend it to readers who want to know what atheism is all about,but i think that it will also be good for more advanced readers to have a look at this book since it covers aspects of atheism as yet not taken into account like the relationship between atheism and feminism.

Useful exploration of atheism's implications

This is a very thought-provoking collection of essays, edited by Michael Martin, Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Boston University. Eighteen leading scholars, mostly from the USA, discuss aspects of atheism and its implications for philosophy, religion, law, anthropology, sociology, psychology, biology and physics.

Sociologist Phil Zuckerman estimates that there are about 500-750 million atheists, agnostics and unbelievers, which is 58 times the number of Mormons, 41 times the number of Jews, 35 times the number of Sikhs, and twice the number of Buddhists. Atheists, agnostics and unbelievers are the fourth largest group, after Christians (two billion), Muslims (1.2 billion) and Hindus (900 million).

Daniel Dennett examines the relationship between atheism and evolution. He shows how matter has evolved to produce mind, rather than matter being produced by an originating mind.

Philosopher David Brink discusses the need for a secular ethics based on objective standards. He notes that in ethical subjectivism, ethics depends on the beliefs of an appraiser, but God is an appraiser too. So religion brings subjectivity into ethics. Also, if ethics depends on God's will, then it is relative to God's will, so religion brings relativism into ethics.

Again, if God commands an action because it is good, then God and his commands are unnecessary. If an action is good because God commands it, then ethics is unnecessary and obedience to God is the only virtue. So religion, which supposedly sets ethics on an objective basis, with independent values and standards, in fact reduces ethics to subjective opinions, with no independent values or standards.

Also religion compromises morality. When eternal bliss is the reward for goodness, then selfish considerations cannot but intrude, inevitably corrupting goodness. Belief in God becomes an insurance policy.

Philosopher Andrea Weisberger writes, "The existence of evil is the most fundamental threat to the traditional Western concept of an all-good, all-powerful God." If we are morally obliged to reduce evil, then God must also be obliged. If he is all-powerful, why doesn't he prevent unnecessary suffering? Those who argue that God uses evil for some greater good are saying that God immorally uses people and their suffering as means to ends.

Philosopher Patrick Grim shows that God's traditional attributes - omnipotence, omniscience and moral perfection - are all intrinsically impossible, self-contradictory idealist fantasies.
