Sad tale of boy living in between worlds- many possible interpretations about Paul's particular predicament. What is undebatable is Willa Cather's skill and insight. I first read "Paul's Case" in Grade 11; I have since returned to it many times, each time my appreciation for the story and Willa Cather's writing ability deepens.

These stories take us to Nebraska farm country as well as to Pittsburgh, Boston, and New York City. Cather writes of Danish and Norwegian immigrants, religion, "high" culture, regret, loss, and regional legend.
The title story is a particularly fascinating character study of a boy who doesn't fit into society--you might think of him as sort of a literary ancestor of J.D. Salinger's Holden Caulfield. Throughout the collection Cather demonstrates a telling eye for visual detail and a keen sense of human tragedy.

Paul's "Case"

I read Paul's Case in my sophomore language class this year and ended up writing a paper on it. I love this story and can relate to Paul. Paul is jaded by society, although he posseses the insight to see beauty others can not. He is misunderstood in his affection for the arts, and therefore stereotyped as having a problem. This is a very worthwhile story for any person who wants a thought-provoking look at society.

A Totally Absorbing Experience

I just finished Reznik's "The Girl from Long Guyland." I took it with me for a long weekend away and found that I read it for several hours at a time until I finished it late into the night. It rings true from this Baby Boomer's perspective, having grown up in a place that sounds a lot like West Meadow. The book captures the flavor and culture of the late sixties to help us understand how even nice kids could get caught up in things that were way over their heads. While Laila is trying to emancipate/separate from her family and childhood self, she finds herself vulnerable to amoral, narcissistic people who disguise themselves as cool, hip activists. These self serving character types also show up in her present life. As the stories of past and present are interwoven, some dangerous secrets threaten to destoy everything that she has built. Reading this book is like going on a wild, scary, funny, roller coaster adventure which accelerates in intensity until reaching the inevitable confrontation of Laila's past and present lives. I highly recommend taking the ride!

Laila Levin exists in a comfortable world of the present with a successful career, a loving husband, a son with the opportunity to attend Stanford, a house on the lake, and a Jack Russell Terrier who adores her. In other words, life is most excellent.

Then a short, cryptic note left behind after the suicide of her college roommate threatens to unravel all the threads of the current life she holds so dear. Laila must face the ugly consequences of a past in which the compulsion to belong shoved aside common sense and good judgment.

What do you do when the sordid mistakes of a previous lifestyle come calling, especially when they contain a dark secret better left veiled by the passage of time? Enter the world of Laila Levin and experience the fear and apprehension of being relentlessly stalked by your previous self.

They say you can never go back again, but that's not true of fiction. Reznik skillfully juxtaposes chapters in current story time with back story. Her use of present and past tense heightens the effect of the two narratives and smooths the transitions.

This is a compelling story very well told.

I lost patience with young Laila at times, but her actions are motivated from the get-go: a lonely girl looking for personal identity and a place to belong. No doubt she is in over her head when she gets involved with the "family," a group of unscrupulous townies who deal drugs to the rich kids attending the local University. The characters, including the '70s era itself, are well drawn, distinct and believable. In short, I was impressed with this book.

Jeff Dixon (The Key to the Kingdom, Deep River Books 2010) is the senior equipping minister of Covenant Community Church in Central Florida. Jeff earned a graduate degree in theological education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He is a native of Orlando, Florida and got the opportunity to spend time in Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom before it opened to the general public. Later he would work in the theme park and has spent many memorable moments in the resort. With a love for storytelling, he has created a story that will have you taking a vacation to Walt Disney World, and seeing it again with a renewed sense of awe and amazement.

Another wild, magical mystery in the Magic Kingdom!

"In the world of Walt Disney, details always mattered and discoveries were always waiting hidden in plain sight." Jeff Dixon in "Unlocking the Kingdom".

Well, in my opinion, and that is what this is, my review, Jeff Dixon has picked up right where he left off in "The Key to the Kingdom" and taken his readers on another wild, magical mystery with Grayson Hawkes and friends throughout the worlds of Disney. If you enjoyed "The Key to the Kingdom" you will enjoy this second installment in this series (that I hope continues) without a doubt. If you haven't read the first book then go get it now!

I really enjoy the factual fiction style as I have made many trips to the Magic Kingdom myself and reading this book is the next best thing to being there for me. I can envision the places where the story takes place. However, I have also learned many new and interesting details "hidden in plain sight" I hope to be able to find and see for myself on my next trip.

It is a mystery so I don't want to divulge any clues or be a spoiler here at all but I believe anyone who enjoys Walt Disney World and knows that feeling you get when you walk through the gates and pass under the train station onto Main Street USA where you truly are in a magical place and can leave the real world behind for a while, you can get a similar feeling in the pages of this book. As Walt Disney said, "There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates' loot on Treasure Island and you can enjoy these riches ever day of your life." This is one of those books. Enjoy!

Once again, I found myself running through the Disney World theme parks right alongside Hawk as he encountered one escapade after another. A huge fan of all things Disney, I enjoyed the heart-racing, page-turning events in this exciting book, and I can't wait for my next visit to Disney World.

Caught up in his own idea

I loved the first book and love Disney. There I said it.

But with this one, I had to try to like it. From the beginning pages it seemed the author was too excited about creating the version of Disney based on the first book. The main character's achievements from book one were repeated about 4 or five times. The achievements and world created by the first book were reiterated too much. The book one summary in the first chapters of this book were extraneous. The book one ideas were drawn out far too much here in the beginning... OKAY I can't do it any more. But I think you get my point.

I'll try not to give away spoilers and yet give you info.

That said, the book isn't as well written as the first in many places. The romance story line is not as good as book one either. The hints (not the ones mentioned above) from the first chapters of the book never really went anywhere.

So if you love Disney and want a book to read during the in-between trips this is a fine "quick read." But the ideas don't go anywhere and the writing is repetitive, meaning the author says the same or similar things very often.

So--I hope I made you laugh. And give you a little scope on the book. If you decide to read more, enjoy! If not, try Kingdom Keepers. They are better but after book one get a little old and scattered.
