sympathetic communion with the dead—whether through séance or "spirit photography"—were
ways of transcending the barriers dissecting the American body politic, including the ultimate
barrier, death. Drawing equally upon social, occult, and physiological registers, Spiritualism
created a unique "social physiology" in which mind was integrated into body and body into
society, leading Spiritualists into earthly social reforms, such as women’s rights and
anti-slavery.

From the beginning, however, Spiritualist political and social
expression was far more diverse than has previously been recognized, encompassing distinctive
proslavery and antiegalitarian strains, and in the wake of racial and political adjustments
following the Civil War, the movement began to fracture. Cox traces the eventual dissolution of
Spiritualism through the contradictions of its various regional and racial factions and through
their increasingly circumscribed responses to a changing world. In the end, he concludes, the
history of Spiritualism was written in the limits of sympathy, and not its limitless
potential.

Most authentic book I have ever read about this time period

Colden was the assistant governor of New York in the late 1600s. Upon request from the governor, Colden collected accounts from both the French historians and the English historians and wrote a paper to the governor eventually to be sent to the King. The purpose of this paper was to help the governor consider the worth of the Indians to the colonists. Colden knew this paper could eventually end up in the hands of the King so he was extremely careful to be as accurate and objective as possible. If you want to read something that was authentic and yet extremely entertaining, this is the book to read!

This Cornell paperback edition is quite good, well bound, good print, a decent size. It does not contain all the introductory material that some other editions contain, but none of them have much biography of the author.
The original book was in two volumes published a number of years apart; all modern versions I have seen are one volume.
Colden came from the British isles after education as a physician. My recollection of the reading I've done about him is that it was at Edinburgh University that he got his advanced schooling. His mother was on a trip to Ireland when he was born. After his first trip to America he returned to Britain to marry. He became the Surveyor General of New York Colony. That meant he travelled the territory a great deal. Since being a physician meant knowing plants which were the medications of that day, he soon documented his observations of plants in New York. He had many children, but it was one of his younger ones, Jane Colden, who did one of the first botany books of the colony. It was not published until modern times but has distinct, accurate drawings of leaves and plant characteristics. (Unfortunately, she married a man by the name of Farquhar (sp), an Englishman, and they left the colonies at the time of the Revolution; she died giving birth to her first child.)
Colden corresponded with Benjamin Franklin, and with other colonial officials. He established communication with Linneaus and is credited with introducing the Linnean (scientific) naming system to the Americas.

Ye Olde inglish writing at its best

This is a very revealing book. It is mostly a synopsis from then existing French and English documents in their dealings with the "locals" of the time, as long as a few first hand accounts by the author. For seventeenth century english, it is not as confusing to read as most. It also sheds light on the way the English (mis)handled the Iroquois, and how most of the five nations remained firmly in their corner anyway, at least most of the time.

Some of the Horrors committed by the Indians and the French (which the French properly and proudly document) actually turned my stomach, and did indeed, as Mr. Colden writes, "offend my Christian sensibilities." Nonetheless, you will learn much of Northeastern Indian customs by reading this book, along with where the English failed in their relationships with these loyal people.

Funny and touching

I enjoyed the evocation of a seaside town and the likeable characters were always close to my feelings. It was hard to put this book down in the same way it's hard to leave a sunny beach with a cool breeze gently keeping you in a perfect reverie.

I started reading this on my girlfriend's kindle and I couldn't put it down. She told me I should play with my own toys. Ahem! Anyway, its a fantastic read about the ups and downs of a rekindled romance. Kind of gives you the bug. Maybe I should be worried. Or go out and buy flowers and chocolates.

I liked this book and the story overall. It isn't sad or deep but it's enjoyable. The characters were likeable and the book had some funny scenes. It was set in England and I liked the description of the country side. Please remember that jumper means sweater.

About the Author
Kari Dunn Buron taught in K-12 with students on the autism spectrum for 30+ years. She developed an Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate program for educators at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN and has done volunteer work specific to autism in Trinidad, Tobago, Barbados, Tanzania and Ghana. In 2003, Kari received a Self-designed Bush Leadership Fellowship that allowed her to spend a year interviewing and working internationally with a number of scientists and researchers in the area of Social Cognition, Education and Autism with a focus on challenging behaviors. Kari is the co-author of The Incredible 5-Point Scale, and the author of When My Worries Get Too Big, A 5 Could Make Me Lose Control and A 5 is Against the Law! (2008 ASA literary award winner). Kari is the co-editor of a textbook for educators titled Learners on the Autism Spectrum: Preparing Highly Qualified Educators (2009 ASA literary award winner) and is the creator of an original social skills magazine designed for students with Asperger Syndrome called The Social Times (2010 Gold Winner, National Parenting Publications Award and Gold Medal Winner Moonbeam Children s Book Awards). Mitzi Beth Curtis, MsEd, is an autism resource specialist currently working for Intermediate School District 287 in Minnesota and is consulting with Minnesota Life College. She has worked in special education, supported employment and residential programs for individuals with disabilities since 1978. Her youngest sister, Maria, sent her on this journey with her birth in 1963.

This second edition of THE INCREDIBLE 5-POINT SCALE book is a great resource for those in the education field and families touched by autism. This book expands on the first book by including new ideas for teaching and also rewarding behavior and social management skills. The book details how scales can be used to teach individuals who are non-verbal or who are on the more severe side of the spectrum.
