New in town, Jane is a loner, so when she discovers the high-tech computer equipment her father has in the garage, it is only natural that she toy with it to see if she can make a portrait of herself. Fascinated by her creation, Jane hopes the self-portrait might somehow become a real person and, incredibly, gets her wish. At first she enjoys this other self, but Jane gets worried, and before long, the inevitable happens: the fake Jane sends the real one away through the computer. From the prologue, readers know that the real Jane makes her way back, though many years have passed, and gets revenge on the adult clone. Unfortunately, the clever idea is executed in a wooden style and peopled with stock characters. Using short cuts and stereotypes to make his points, the author circumvents real storytelling; readers will find this effort unsatisfying. Ages 12-up.

Grade 5-8 Since 15-year-old Jane continually fights with her mother, she thinks that life would be easier if she could share it with a copy of herself. She plays with her father's computer, constructing a "program" of herself with some improvements. She broadcasts it into outer space, where it is picked up by a planet that interprets it as a sort of catalog order and sends back a duplicate. (Speed of light limitations are totally ignored.) For a while Jane's secret copy seems to be all that she wanted, but the improved copy steals the affectons of Jane's family and her boyfriend and tricks her into getting beamed to the planet of the copy's origin. This is a trick ending because the first chapter implies that the girl at the door is demanding payment for the copy, not Jane herself wanting her life back. In any case, the book leaves unresolved how Jane is supposed to collect, making the story nearly a practical joke on the reader. This is not science fiction even though computers and alien planets are used as plot devices. An effective story in this genre, like Sleator's The Duplicate (Dutton, 1988), depends on believability, and no one old enough to read this book is likely to find its instantaneous transmissions or other pseudoscientific hocus-pocus capable of creating a credible atmosphere.
