"This is without a doubt one of the most poignant books I've ever read; and I'm an avid reader. Love, friendship, courage and sacrifice all brought to life in this wonderful novel. His characters are rich and real and dimensional and above all, people you wish you were blessed enough to have in your own life. Please ignore the poor reviews as I think the overarching theme was lost on some of the readers. I sobbed at the end of this beautiful story,wiped my tears and re-read it. It's a very quick read and definitely one not to be missed. Thank you Mr. Van Heerling for your stunningly touching story." K.J.

Van Heerling's Books Make You Think...

Van Heerling is a complex writer, he employs the rarely used device of an untrustworthy narrator, which I first encountered, many years ago, in reading Mark Twain's 'Huckleberry Finn.' It's actually fitting that 'Dreams of Eli' is a much more adult, unsentimental, version of 'Huckleberry Finn,' exploring the relationship between Eli, a white man fighting for the South, and Ezra, a black man fighting for the Union, who were once childhood best friends. Through the use of flashbacks, the reader learns how they came to be on opposite sides of the Civil War. It's a tragic and haunting tale about the fantasy of running away and the cold harsh reality of life and death. This is beautifully written, formatted, and edited book. No spoilers, but the ending will make readers rethink everything that occurred before in this elegantly conceived novel.

A truly moving story

This is only the second review I have written and there is not much I can add to the other reviews, but I was so moved by Dreams of Eli that thought when a book is this well written one should let others know.

A Pensive Tale

Dreams Of Eli grants us a detailed retrospective of Eli's life and loves. The story carries you back and forth between the present(which in this novel is 1863)and points in Eli's past ranging from childhood to young adulthood. All of this is done very smoothly despite the challenge of keeping the flow of the story intact when using such a format. It's an excellent story; earthy and visceral as it is thought provoking. This is not to say that it is a dour tale, as there are many charming and humorous moments worked into the narrative, but overall it made me think and reflect upon my own life and what is important. That is the most one can hope to gain from reading a novel in my humble opinion. Anytime that a story can make me immerse myself within it and open my mind then I am happy with the experience.
If you would enjoy something unique and thoughtful to read, I encourage you to pick a copy of this or Malaika which is a novel by the same author. Mr. Heerling is adept at relating some of life's finer struggles in a way that leaves the reader feeling improved for having read his work.
