Emilio had brought a bottle of malbec and two plastic glasses. He poured a bit of the wine into each, and handed a glass to Dante. But usually they wore dresses the kind of which Dante admired in the windows of Uniqlo or Zara or Fab 208 down in The Village. Their dresses brimmed with color, humor and very successful attempts at sensuous beauty. While Dante and Emilio’s dance shoes always needed a shine, the stiletto-heeled shoes of most of the women at The Three-Cornered Hat were so carefully designed and shaped for elegant dance that a major subject of conversation among the women was their shoes. They modeled them for each other. They laughed, envious and appreciative of such romantically clad feet.
Dante and Emilio danced with a number of the women with whom they had danced at other milongas. The room filled, and suddenly, spectacularly, Marianita Miró walked through the curtain.

The other side of the continent

At times we come across work by an author unknown to us and the impact is so intense that it leaves us wondering why this is a first encounter. Terence Clarke is that sort of writer. Look up information about him and as important as he is there is not a lot written about him. Where was he born? His style in his superb collection of short stories LITTLE BRIDGET AND THE FLAMES OF HELL is so Irish in poignancy and quality that he must have Irish blood in his veins (think John Banville, Seamus Haney, Colm Tóibín, James Joyce). But his brief bio states only that `Terence Clarke is a novelist, journalist, professional editor and filmmaker. He lives in San Francisco. Terence Clarke has written several critically acclaimed novels. He is a prolific and much-published short-story writer and an accomplished translator of writing of every sort from Spanish to English. He has written for corporate business and for television and video, as well has having ghostwritten non-fiction books and book proposals for a number of others. He has been called "an inspired -- and inspiring -- editor".
So now we enter another collection of stories, this time not Irish influenced and not in San Francisco - this brief story is from his NEW YORK STORIES series he is publishing one at a time. The title comes from the name of a 19th century Manhattan ruin on Hudson Street at 14th. It is a dance hall for patrons who love the Argentine tango. Dante Gingham, once a poet but now a marketer for hand made fashion collectibles, visits the Three Cornered Hat to tango. Dante and his friend Emilio from Argentina (both NYU MBA graduates) enjoy an evening of dancing the tango and 'The room filled, and suddenly... spectacularly ...Marianita Miró walked through the curtain. Dante had seen her just once before, on the stage at Carnegie Hall. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra had been playing that night, a selection of modern concert music from South America. So, a few Villa Lobos pieces, some Danzas Criollas of Alberto Ginestera, an arrangement of a tune by Violeta Parra. The orchestra devoted the rest of the concert to the Argentine Astor Piazzolla, and for several of the numbers, Marianita had come on stage to dance.' After a long exchange of incidents Dante gets is wish to dance with the magical Marianita, and tango they do, until Marianita's rich husband arrives and Dante's desire for Marianita is somewhat quenched by Marianita's husband's offer to underwrite his fledgling business. And the tango goes on at the Three Cornered Hat.
