Called to be a missionary as a teenager, I had a great desire to fulfill God's will, but had a great sense of inadequacy for such an extraordinary purpose. Part of meditation is to memorize God's Word, so I began a systematic method of memorizing consecutive passages of scripture. Through the years I learned, both by study and by experience, how God made our memory function. Presently, I have 42 chapters memorized and, best of all, our missionary work has prospered beyond what I could have imagined.

GREAT STUDY METHODS!

I was fortunate enough to pick up this book when it was free - but it is definitely worth buying if you are looking to memorize scripture.
I've bought other books (years ago) on how to memorize scripture - but they were not nearly as helpful as this book. I love the way he broke apart a sample verse to share techniques on how to memorize it easily. He made it very easy to understand the process of how to memorize and also gave a great idea for how/when to review the verses you've memorized.
As a teenager years and years ago, I was involved in quizzing at our church and I memorized (word for word) the first 13 chapters of I Corinthians. Unfortunately, I didn't keep up with reviewing and I've lost much of what I memorized except for a few key verses.
But as an adult, I've memorized several verses that have personal meaning to me - and they are always there when I need them.
I do believe scripture memorization works - I'm not sure if I will do long passages as the author suggests or go back to memorizing specific verses which meet my needs.
But I do know - I will be using the techniques that the author suggests - both for memorization AND retention!

One way to memorize Scripture--not sure it's helpful

Dr. Daniel Morris, author of "Why You Really Can Memorize Scripture" and his wife served as missionaries in Chiapas, Mexico. He is presently the pastor of the Baptist Church he founded in Tuxtla Gutierrez and is dedicated to training Mexican pastors and counseling.
When, as a teenager, he was called to missions, Dr. Morris found encouragement in God's Word and sought to memorize it. He began a habit of memorizing consecutive passages of Scripture and learned through study and experience how God created our memory.
In the book, Dr. Morris outlines his method beginning with how our memory works and the importance of memorizing scripture. He walks readers through the steps of Scripture memorization through repetition and helpful phrases.
Though he assures readers they can memorize Scripture following his method, I am uncertain as to how helpful the idea of catch phrases may be. It is highly possible the continuous repetition of the passages of Scripture helps the most. Answering and meditating on questions he presents in the book may help in the understanding of some passages and may help you learn to paraphrase. It may help some people, but I don't know if it will be helpful to everyone.

Not very helpful

I did not find this book extremely helpful. The one tip that was good was the idea of reviewing already memorized scriptures while doing routine tasks such as when brushing your teeth, and taking ten minutes a day to work on learning a new scripture. Some of the other tips were either too complicated to make it easier to memorize or were obvious things that we already know.
